In the rich, green fields of Punjab, dairy farming is a way of life. Across its villages and towns, thousands of commercial dairy farms engaged with activity, each one telling a unique story of perseverance and progress. Among these is the story of Sawarnjit Singh from Moga, a man who has taken his father’s modest beginnings and turned them into something remarkable.
Years ago, Sawarnjit’s father started small, with just two or three cattle in their rustic barn. It was a simple operation — a few buffaloes, daily hand milking, and hard work that defined their day-to- day life. Sawarnjit grew up watching his father’s unwavering commitment to the farm, soaking in every lesson of care and dedication. Over the years, their herd grew slowly, but when Sawarnjit took over, he envisioned something bigger.
Hand milking became a time-consuming task as the number of animals increased. Each day, Sawarnjit and his workers spent hours milking by hand, straining to keep up with the growing herd. “We’d start before sunrise and still be at it well into the day,” Sawarnjit remembers. “It was exhausting work, and we knew we couldn’t keep up this way forever.”
To address the growing demands of the farm, Sawarnjit made his first move by investing in a basic milking machine with two clusters. It was a step in the right direction, but still, as the herd continued to grow, it became clear that this was not enough to keep up with the farm’s needs. The machine helped reduce the time spent milking, but the process was still labor-intensive and inefficient.
It was around this time that Sawarnjit’s daughter, who had always been a helping hand on the farm, missed school. Her late arrival was a result of being involved in the long milking process, and the scolding she received from teachers hurt Sawarnjit deeply. He realized that in order to give his daughter the opportunity to succeed, something needed to change.
The turning point came when Sawarnjit made the bold decision to install Prompt Easyline, a modern milking parlour system designed to revolutionize his farm’s operations. This wasn’t just a technological upgrade — it marked a new chapter in the Singh family’s dairy journey. Instead of the laborious task of milking cattle one by one, the Easyline system allowed him to milk 10 cattle at once, saving precious time and effort. “It’s like we suddenly had extra hands on the farm,” Sawarnjit shares. “What used to take three hours, we could now finish in one — and with far fewer people.”
But it wasn’t just about speed. The cows, once restless during hand milking, became noticeably calmer. The noise of the vacuum pump, once a source of stress for the animals, was now quieter, creating a more peaceful environment in the parlour. “The cows are calmer, and it shows in the milk,” Sawarnjit notes with pride. The cattle responded better, and with Prompt Easyline’s efficient, touch-free milking, there was less strain on them. This calmness translated into better milk production — an increase of 40 kilograms each day, a significant boost to the farm’s output.
In the past, after milking by hand or with the basic machine, transferring the milk into cans was an arduous process, requiring extra labour and increasing the risk of spillage or contamination. With Prompt Easyline, the milk now flowed directly from the parlour to the Bulk Milk Cooler, streamlining the process and maintaining hygiene. The days of manually lugging heavy cans were over, and the farm’s milk quality improved drastically. Nestlé, one of Punjab’s biggest dairy buyers, rewarded this commitment to quality by offering Sawarnjit an incentive of ₹0.35 per litre — a clear recognition of the farm’s high standards.
With these changes, Sawarnjit not only saw an improvement in milk production but also a reduction in his operational costs. His cattle were healthier, his workers were happier, and the farm was running more smoothly than ever before.
For Sawarnjit Singh, this wasn’t just about adopting technology for the sake of it. It was about continuing his father’s legacy, ensuring the family farm could grow and flourish for generations to come. By balancing tradition with innovation, Sawarnjit has built a farm that honors the past while embracing the future — a true testament to what dedication, vision, and the right tools can achieve.
